Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Specified Semiautomatic Firearms (SSF) Training
Students interested in taking a Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Specified Semiautomatic Firearms (SSF) course should be aware of several requirements before registering.
Step 1 — Obtain Your Eligibility Card
Before enrolling in an SSF course, you must obtain a Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card (EC).
Contact your local Sheriff's Office to apply. If your county sheriff is not participating in the program, you may apply through a participating Colorado county sheriff's office.
You must obtain your Eligibility Card before enrolling in the SSF course.
No Live-Fire Requirement
The CPW SSF course is classroom-based and does not require live-fire training.
SSF Course Options
CPW provides two training pathways depending on whether you have qualifying Hunter Education.
4-Hour Basic SSF Course — Recommended
If you have a qualifying Hunter Education certificate, you may be eligible to take the 4-hour Basic SSF course.
Your Hunter Education certificate does not necessarily have to have been originally issued in Colorado. If you completed qualifying Hunter Education through another state or recognized program, your certification must be verified and recognized by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Contact a CPW office for assistance with verifying your Hunter Education credentials and ensuring they are properly recorded in the Colorado system.
Why we recommend this pathway: If you do not currently have Hunter Education, consider completing an approved Hunter Education course first. On-line Hinter Education classes are available from other states and the NRA. Once your Hunter Education credentials are recognized by CPW, you can take the shorter 4-hour SSF course while also retaining the additional benefits of a Hunter Education certification.
12-Hour Extended SSF Course
If you do not have qualifying Hunter Education, you are not required to obtain it before completing SSF training. Instead, you may take the 12-hour Extended SSF course.
However, students should understand that:
The Extended course requires 8 additional hours of SSF classroom instruction compared with the Basic course.
Completing the 12-hour Extended SSF course does not provide you with a Hunter Education certificate.
For many students, completing an approved Hunter Education course first, followed by the 4-hour Basic SSF course, may provide greater long-term value—particularly for anyone who may wish to hunt in the future.
Have questions about which course is right for you? Complete our Class Questionnaire and we will help you identify the appropriate training option.
